For most Pakistani travellers, the Azerbaijan e-visa is the visa that makes a Baku trip possible. It is issued online through ASAN Visa, the official electronic visa system of the Republic of Azerbaijan, at evisa.gov.az. There is no consulate visit and no passport courier. But the system is precise, a refused application's fee is not refunded, and small errors cost real money and time.

This guide walks through the process step by step. Every rule quoted here comes from the conditions published on the official portal and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan. Rules can change, so always check the portal's current conditions before you apply. Baku.pk is a private consultancy, not a government website; we prepare and submit applications on behalf of clients who prefer not to do it themselves.

Do Pakistanis need a visa for Azerbaijan?

Yes. Pakistani passport holders must hold a valid Azerbaijan visa before travelling. There is no visa on arrival. For tourism, family visits and short business trips, the electronic visa is the usual route.

If your purpose is work, study, a long stay or more than one entry, the e-visa is not the right visa. Those cases go through the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Islamabad or, for living in the country, a temporary residence permit.

Before you start: prepare these items

  1. Your passport. Check the expiry date. It must stay valid at least three months beyond the e-visa's expiry, which itself runs 90 days from issue. In practice, a passport with plenty of validity left avoids any doubt.
  2. A clear colour scan of the passport photo page. Flat, evenly lit, no glare or shadow, all four corners visible, and both lines of the machine-readable zone at the bottom readable.
  3. A working email address that you check regularly. The e-visa and all status updates are sent there.
  4. An internationally enabled bank card to pay the state fee online. Many Pakistani cards need international e-commerce switched on first.
  5. Your planned arrival date and the address where you will stay in Azerbaijan, such as your hotel.

For a fuller checklist, see Baku visa requirements.

Step 1: Open the official portal

Go to evisa.gov.az. Be careful with look-alike websites that appear in search ads; check the address carefully. Read the conditions page once before you start.

Step 2: Choose your nationality and travel details

Select Pakistan as your citizenship and enter your intended arrival date, along with the other travel details the form asks for. The arrival date matters, because the e-visa is tied to it. Make sure it matches your flight booking.

Step 3: Choose standard or urgent processing

  • Standard: issued within three working days. Remember that weekends and public holidays are not working days, so apply early when a holiday is coming.
  • Urgent: issued within three hours, including holidays and non-working days, at a higher state fee. Useful for last-minute trips, but not a substitute for planning.

We do not publish fee amounts because the official portal sets them and they can change; the portal shows the current fee before you pay.

Step 4: Enter your personal and passport details

Enter your name, date of birth, passport number, issue and expiry dates exactly as printed in your passport. This is where most problems start:

  • Do not leave out a middle name that appears in the passport.
  • Put the surname and given names in the correct fields.
  • Double-check every digit of the passport number.
  • Use the passport you will travel on, not an old one.

Step 5: Upload your passport scan

Upload the scan of your passport photo page. The official conditions list an unclear or incorrect passport scan as a reason an application can be refused. If the image is blurred, cropped, rotated or has glare, rescan it before uploading.

Step 6: Add your address in Azerbaijan

Enter the address where you will stay, usually your hotel. Keep the booking confirmation; you may be asked for it at the border.

Step 7: Review everything and pay

Review every field against your passport, one by one. Then pay the state fee with your international card. Keep the payment confirmation and application number.

Step 8: Track the status and download the e-visa

Status updates are sent by email, and you can check the application status on the portal. When approved, the e-visa arrives as a PDF. Open it and check every detail again: name, passport number and dates.

Step 9: Print it and travel

The e-visa is not stamped into your passport. Print it and present it with your passport at the border. Airlines will also ask to see it at check-in in Pakistan. Keep a digital copy on your phone as a backup.

After you arrive

  • The e-visa allows a stay of up to 30 days on a single entry.
  • If you stay more than 15 days, your place of stay must be registered with the State Migration Service. Hotels usually do this for their guests; with a private stay, make sure it is done.
  • Leaving Azerbaijan and coming back needs a new visa, because the e-visa is single entry.

What if the e-visa is refused?

The official conditions are clear that payments are not refunded when an e-visa is refused. The rules allow you to re-apply through a diplomatic mission of Azerbaijan. Before re-applying, find out what went wrong: the most common causes are an unreadable scan, a name entered differently from the passport, or a passport too close to expiry. Fix the cause first.

Common mistakes Pakistani applicants make

  • Using a phone photo of the passport taken at an angle or under a light
  • Entering the father's name or a family name in the wrong field
  • Applying for standard processing just before a long weekend
  • Using an email address they rarely check
  • Assuming the e-visa covers work or study
  • Forgetting that each family member, including children, needs their own application

Timing your application

Apply once your travel dates are reasonably firm, because the e-visa is linked to your arrival date and is valid for 90 days from issue. Applying too early can waste part of that validity; applying too late can force you into the more expensive urgent option. For most trips, applying a week or two before departure gives comfortable room for standard processing, a re-check of the PDF and printing. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it first through the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, then apply with the new passport.

Checking your e-visa PDF properly

When the e-visa arrives, do not just file it away. Open the PDF and compare it with your passport line by line: full name and its spelling, passport number, date of birth, nationality and the validity dates. Check that the arrival date range covers your flight. If anything does not match, deal with it before you travel rather than at the airport in Lahore or Islamabad, where there is no time to fix it. Print at least two copies, one for your hand luggage and one for a family member's bag, and keep the PDF saved offline on your phone in case you lose a printout during the trip. Airline check-in staff and immigration officers in Baku will both expect to see it alongside your passport.

Family and group applications

Every traveller needs their own e-visa, including infants. Prepare all applications together, with the same arrival date and address, so the whole family is approved on the same timeline.

Should you apply yourself or use a consultant?

Many people apply successfully on their own using the official portal. Others prefer a specialist to check everything, especially families, first-time travellers and people on tight timelines. If you would like us to handle it, our Azerbaijan e-visa service includes a free passport and scan check, a fully prepared application that you approve before submission, and tracking until the decision. The decision itself is always made by the authorities of Azerbaijan.
